Shui Long Wo Star Lookout

🏯 【Shui Long Wo Star Lookout (水浪窩 觀星)】is a pretty unique landmark in Sai Kung (西貢) District, Hong Kong. Built in the early 1980s, it’s located right inside the Shui Long Wo (水浪窩) Campsite along Sai Sha Road (西沙路). The tower is modeled after the Yuan Dynasty astronomical observatory in Gaocheng Town, Dengfeng City, Henan Province. Though it’s not actually used for real stargazing, this faux-antique structure serves as a cool decorative feature in the country park. Looking like a mini “castle”, it offers a fun and interesting backdrop for visitors to snap photos. —

📍 Location Near the start of the , Sai Kung (西貢) District, New Territories, Hong Kong (within Ma On Shan Country Park area)
🏰 Architectural Features Faux-antique astronomical observatory, about 6 metres high, resembling a mini castle. The design is inspired by the ancient observatory in Gaocheng Town, Dengfeng County, Henan Province.
🧭 Historical Background The original prototype was commissioned by Kublai Khan (Emperor Shizu of Yuan) in 1276 for measuring solar shadows, stargazing, and timekeeping.
🌌 Function & Usage Though designed with stargazing in mind, the view at night is quite blocked by the surrounding trees, so its actual stargazing effect is pretty limited. Nowadays, it’s mostly a spot for relaxing and taking IG-worthy photos.
🌳 Surrounding Environment Located right at the start of the , surrounded by dense woodlands. It’s super peaceful and sits right next to the Campsite and MacLehose Trail Section 4 (麥理浩徑 第4段).
📸 Photo Hotspots The Star Lookout itself, the ridge of Wan Kuk Shan (Curved Hill), the pyramid-shaped peak of Tai Kam Chung (Pyramid Hill), and the paragliding area of Ngong Ping Plateau.

— Standing at about 6 metres high, this star lookout was built using rocks sourced nearby, blending in perfectly with the nature around it. The architectural details, like the small holes on both sides of the tower top and the grooved vertical walls on the facade, mimic the ancient design used for measuring solar shadows. Even though the growing trees have blocked the stargazing view a bit over the years, it’s still a major landmark in the BBQ area. There are info boards on-site introducing its source of inspiration—the Gaocheng Observatory in Henan—as well as the history of astronomer Guo Shoujing. —
