🧘‍♀️ 【Wisdom Path (心經簡林)】 is the world’s largest outdoor large-scale wood-carved Buddhist sutra monument. It is located on the eastern slopes of Muyu Hill in Ngong Ping (昂坪) , Lantau Island (大嶼山) , Hong Kong, situated in close proximity to the Tian Tan Buddha (天壇大佛) and Po Lin Monastery (寶蓮禪寺) . This artistic monument was adapted from a masterful calligraphy donation of the Heart Sutra gifted to Hong Kong in 2002 by the world-renowned polymath and sinologist Professor Jao Tsung-I. Completed in May 2005 at a cost of HK$9.5 million, the installation features 38 monumental rosewood pillars, standing 8 to 10 meters tall, arranged along the natural contours of the hillside in an “∞” layout to symbolize endless cosmic continuity. Professor Jao Tsung-I dedicated his hand-brushed Heart Sutra script to the citizens of Hong Kong in 2002, aiming to bring spiritual comfort and resilience to the public during a period of severe economic downturn.

While early ideas favored a stone stela installation, concerns over wind erosion prompted a shift to rosewood timber. This material masterfully emulates ancient Chinese bamboo slips, allowing for a much more faithful rendering of dynamic calligraphic strokes.

The execution was entrusted to three veteran wood artisans—Tong Chik-seung, Cheung Sing-hung, and Lee Kwok-chuen. Each character measures roughly 600mm × 600mm, cut into the wood at a precise depth of 19mm.

“Form is emptiness, emptiness is form”—the central truth of the Heart Sutra anchors the entire layout of the monument.
