Sha Tau Kok

🏛️ 【 Sha Tau Kok】 (Hong Kong’s Hidden Border Gem) is located in the northern part of the New Territories, running right along the border with Yantian District in Shenzhen. Ever since 1951, it was sealed off to the general public as a designated Border Closed Area. Thanks to its gradual opening up in recent years, Sha Tau Kok has quickly crowned itself as a hot new local travel spot, beautifully serving up a mix of stunning natural landscapes, authentic Hakka culture, and rich historical relics. —

🕰️ Historical Background

  • It was already a bustling market town back in the Qing dynasty, known as the East Wo Market (東和墟).
  • Following the signing of the Convention for the Extension of Hong Kong Territory in 1898, the Sha Tau Kok River became the official boundary line for Chung Ying Street (literally “China-England Street”).
  • From the 1950s onwards, the area was locked down as a closed border zone with strict entry limits for non-residents, which naturally triggered population loss and a quiet business scene.
  • A phased reopening kicked off in 2022, and by 2024, the second stage was launched—opening up the entire Sha Tau Kok Closed Area for local tourism, with the sole exception of Chung Ying Street.
