Trenches and Weapon Pits: The Japanese forces invaded Hong Kong on December 8, 1941, and the British forces surrendered on Christmas Day, December 25, after 18 days of resistance. During the early days of the Japanese occupation, their troops in the New Territories were mainly stationed in areas like Fanling and San Wai, with relatively few personnel. It was not until around 1944 that the Japanese military began constructing defensive lines in the northeastern New Territories to guard against Allied counter-attacks and anti-Japanese guerrilla activities.
