Kau Ling Chung

🐶【Kau Ling Chung (狗嶺涌)】 is a hidden natural gem located in southwestern , Hong Kong. Seamlessly blending valleys, streams, bays, and historical remnants, it stands as an exceptional destination for hiking, camping, and cultural exploration. —

🗺️ Location & Origin of the Name

  • Situated on the northeastern side of the Peninsula, it lies adjacent to and the Reservoir.
  • The name “Kau Ling Chung” originates from the local stream (涌), and also references the neighboring hill and coastal cape.
  • With an elevation of approximately 95 meters, the terrain features gentle undulations, making it highly suitable for casual trekking and camping.

🏕️ Kau Ling Chung Campsite

  • It is celebrated as one of the most picturesque campsites within South Lantau Country Park.
  • The campsite covers an area of about 1 hectare and is equipped with 16 designated campsites.

Campsite Features:

  • Positioned just steps away from a sandy beach, offering idyllic opportunities for stargazing and listening to the ocean waves.
  • Equipped with dry toilets and waste pits to encourage eco-friendly camping practices.
  • The water source comes from a seasonal stream and must be thoroughly boiled before consumption.

🧭 Hiking Routes & Transportation

  • Kau Ling Chung serves as the junction point between Sections 7 and 8 of the Lantau Trail.
  • Hikers can set off from Reservoir, walking along or following Lantau Trail Section 8.

Getting There:

  • Take bus routes 11, 11A, or 23 and alight at the Shek Pik Sha Tsui Stop.
  • From there, the campsite is roughly a 1.5-hour walk.

🏛️ Historical Monuments & Culture

  • The historic Southern Boundary Stone is located nearby, erected by the Anglo-Hong Kong government in 1902.
  • The site is also close to the Fan Lau Fort and the Fan Lau Stone Circle, allowing for an extended historical exploration.

  • There is no treated government water supply at the campsite; please pack in your own water or ensure stream water is boiled before use.
  • Protect the natural environment by practicing “Leave No Trace” principles—do not pollute water sources or litter.
  • The beach is not suitable for swimming due to a rocky seabed; please prioritize safety and exercise caution along the shore.
