This hiking route kicks off from 【Pak Kung Au (伯公坳)】, which sits at about 340m above sea level. You’ll head along 「【Lantau Trail Section 2 (鳳凰徑第二段)】」, pushing all the way up the slope to reach 【Sunset Peak (大東山)】 at 869m. Known for its epic views and the silvergrass that blankets the hills in autumn and winter, 【Sunset Peak (大東山)】 is the third-highest peak in Hong Kong. Next, you’ll hit another landmark called 【Lantau Mountain Camp (爛頭營)】, featuring 20 stone cabins built from granite. These used to be retreats for British missionaries but have now become super popular “check-in” spots. Keep going and you’ll pass the 【Heaven’s Pool (天池)】, a small, scenic mountain pool. Further ahead, you’ll reach 【Sheung Tung Au (雙東坳)】, the saddle between Sunset Peak and Yi Tung Shan. Finally, the trail leads you down to 【Mui Wo Ferry Pier (梅窩碼頭)】. With such stunning scenery, this route is perfect for hikers with decent fitness who love nature and photography.

【Starting Point】 From Exit B of 【MTR Tung Chung Station (港鐵東涌站)】, head towards 【Tung Chung Town Centre (東涌市中心) Bus Terminus】 and take Lantau Bus route 3M, 11, 11A, or 23. After getting off at the 【Pak Kung Au (伯公坳)】 bus stop, follow the stone path for a short distance, then turn left into the starting point of 【Lantau Trail – Section 2 (鳳凰徑 • 第2段)】 heading towards 【Sunset Peak (大東山)】.

【End Point】 After the ancient trail leads you back to the town area, pass through 【Luk Tei Tong Village (鹿地塘村)】 and 【Ma Po Village (麻布村)】 until you reach 【Ngan Shue Street (銀樹街)】. This is 【Silver River (銀河)】, a small river running alongside the street. Walk along the waterfront promenade by the 【Silver River (銀河)】, pass the Cooked Food Centre, and you will arrive at the destination, 【Mui Wo (梅窩) Ferry Pier】. You can then head to the nearby bus terminus to take the 3M bus back to 【Tung Chung (東涌)】 or catch a ferry to 【Central (中環)】.

After alighting at the 【Pak Kung Au (伯公坳)】 bus stop, follow the stone path for a short distance, then turn left towards the starting point of 【Lantau Trail Section 2 (鳳凰徑第2段)】 heading to 【Sunset Peak (大東山)】.

2. 📍 Lantau Trail – Section 2 (鳳凰徑 • 第2段)

Facing • Lantau Peak (鳳凰山)

Start from Pak Kung Au and head uphill along 【Lantau Trail – Section 2 (鳳凰徑 • 第2段)】. After hiking up a long stretch of incline, take a breather and look back at the majestic 【Lantau Peak (鳳凰山)】 in the distance.

After passing 【Distance Post • L015 (標距柱 • L015)】, you’ll see a towering hillock ahead. Overcoming this hill is quite a challenge, and 【Sunset Peak (大東山)】 lies just behind it.

Atop the Hill (山丘之上)

After some hard climbing, you’ve finally conquered this steep hill. Standing at the top, you can look back at the scenery around 【Cheung Sha Village (長沙村)】; nearby on the left are 【Pui O Wan (貝澳灣)】 and 【Mong Tung Wan (望東灣)】, while 【Shek Kwu Chau (石鼓洲)】 island sits in the distance.

Sunset Peak (大東山)

After all that hard work ascending over 540 metres, you have finally reached the destination of this trip: 【Sunset Peak (大東山)】.

4. 📍 Lantau Mountain Camp (爛頭營)

Leaving 【Sunset Peak (大東山)】, follow the small trail next to the “Sunset Peak” wooden sign towards the stone shacks ahead. This is the next landmark of the trip, 【Lantau Mountain Camp (爛頭營)】.

5. 📍 Sunset Peak • Skypool (大東山 • 天池)

After leaving 【Lantau Lodge No. 18 (爛頭營 18號)】, continue along 【Lantau Trail Section 2 (鳳凰徑 第2段)】 for about 200 metres. Turn right at 【Lantau Lodge No. 11 (爛頭營 11號)】, where a small side trail leads to 【Tin Chi (天池)】 (Heaven’s Pool) on the mountainside.

This is the famous 【Skypool (天池)】 located at 【Sunset Peak (大東山)】.

6. 📍 Sheung Tung Au (雙東坳)

Looking up at • Lin Fa Shan (蓮花山)

Leave 【Skypool (天池)】 and head back to 【Lantau Trail – Section 2 (鳳凰徑 • 第2段)】, continuing towards 【Nam Shan Village (南山村)】. When passing through 【Sheung Tung Au (雙東坳)】, look to your left to see a towering peak known as 【Lin Fa Shan (蓮花山)】.

7. 📍 Nam Shan (南山) • BBQ Area

After crossing 【Sheung Tung Au (雙東坳)】, the trail is downhill all the way. After hiking for 3km, you will arrive at the 【Nam Shan (南山) • BBQ Area】.

Once the ancient trail leads you back to the urban area, pass through 【Luk Tei Tong Village (鹿地塘村)】 and 【Ma Po Village (麻布村)】 to reach 【Ngan Shue Street (銀樹街)】. This is the 【Silver River (銀河)】, a small river running alongside the street.

10. 📍 Mui Wo (梅窩) • Ferry Pier
