🗼 【Fool Tower (傻人塔 – 香港山野中的理想之塔)】 is a historically significant concrete structure built in 1959, perched on the mountainside of Lion Tail Ridge on Lion Rock . This 15-foot-tall, six-storey stone tower was erected by five hikers who proudly called themselves “fools”. They painstakingly hauled construction materials up the rugged slopes of Lion Tail Ridge to build it. The tower was inscribed with a central motto “Indomitable Spirit (頂天立地)” alongside a poetic couplet: “Two mountains embrace the sea where the carp swims; a single tower pierces the sky to wake the sleeping lion.” These words captured their deep admiration for Hong Kong’s natural beauty, while their seemingly “foolish” dedication reflected a pure passion for nature, an pursuit of ideals, and an unyielding love for the Hong Kong spirit. However, the tower’s lifespan was short-lived; it collapsed in 1964 due to a powerful typhoon, leaving only ruins on the hillside today. Despite this, its unique origin and name continue to draw hikers and history buffs alike. Visitors can enjoy spectacular, wide-open views of the mountains alongside the sweeping urban landscapes of Kowloon and Hong Kong Island, while reflecting on the creators’ spirit and connection to nature. Today, the ruins of Fool Tower have become a major landmark and a popular photo spot along the Lion Tail Ridge hiking trail. —
