Fan Kam Road

🛣️【Fan Kam Road (粉錦公路)】 is a major trunk road running through the New Territories, Hong Kong, connecting Pat Heung in District with in North District. Spanning approximately 7.8 kilometres, it connects Po Shek Wu Road in with Kam Tin Road in Pat Heung. Opened to traffic in 1953, it was initially named “Fan Kam Road” (粉錦路) and was officially renamed to “Fan Kam Road” (粉錦公路) on August 24, 1979. This road was one of the infrastructure projects built by the Hong Kong government in the 1950s to strengthen transport links between the eastern and western New Territories. Originally constructed by the British Forces in Hong Kong to connect the transport networks of the northeast and northwest New Territories, access was initially restricted to vehicles with permits until the launch of KMB Route 18 (now Route 77K) in 1955 turned it into a public transit corridor. Fan Kam Road passes through numerous villages and facilities, including , Lin Tong Mei, the Golf Course of the Hong Kong Golf Club, North District Hospital, and the Pat Heung JPC Centre (formerly the Pat Heung Fire Services Training School). However, with a road width of only about 5.5 metres and numerous sharp bends, certain sections—such as where it crosses the Double Fish River at —are exceptionally narrow, requiring large vehicles to yield carefully when passing each other. Furthermore, the footpaths are narrow and disconnected, and some stretches even lack crash barriers, making driving and pedestrian safety a matter of particular concern.

— Fan Kam Road is not just a vital transport artery, but also a witness to rural development and military history in Hong Kong. The Pat Heung Fire Services Training School along the road was built in 1968 and served as the New Territories Fire Services Operational Headquarters. In 2016, it was handed over to the police force and transformed into the “Pat Heung Junior Police Call Permanent Activity Centre”, equipped with facilities like simulated shooting ranges and zip lines. In addition, the Fanling Golf Course (opened in 1911) and the “Lighthouse Twin Fish” transitional housing project (completed in 2024) reflect the recreational and social functions of the area. Ecology and agriculture coexist around the road, as seen in the farmland of Tsiu Keng and the rural landscape of To Shek Wu, though villagers have called for improvements due to the lack of proper pavements and guardrails along certain stretches. —

🏗️ Historical Evolution

Year Event
July 1953 Officially opened to traffic
November 1955 KMB Route 18 (now Route 77K) began operations, becoming the first public transport route to use this road

— In recent years, Fan Kam Road has faced the challenge of balancing development and conservation. The government plans to resume part of the Fanling Golf Course for public housing, which is expected to provide around 9,000 units by 2029. Concurrently, road improvement studies are underway to address traffic easing and tree preservation. Currently, KMB Route 77K and green minibus Route 18 remain the main public transport services, while a fatal traffic accident in June 2025 highlighted the ongoing risks of the road conditions. Blending history, community needs, and natural landscapes, this road continues to evolve into a multifaceted corridor in the northern New Territories. —
