📜 Historical Timeline
Year Event Ming Dynasty (1574) The very first local settlements took root, including Tai Wai Village, which was established in 1574 and stands as Sha Tin’s oldest walled village. Qing Dynasty Sha Tin was originally known as “Lek Yuen” (meaning “trickling spring”), named after its crystal-clear water sources; local law and order was managed by the historic Lek Yuen Nine Alliances. 1898 Following the signing of the Convention for the Extension of Hong Kong Territory, Sha Tin was officially leased to Great Britain. 1899 When British forces took over the New Territories, they mistakenly recorded “Sha Tin” (originally just a tiny village) as the name for the entire area, and it has stuck ever since. 1910 The Kowloon-Canton Railway (KCR) officially opened for service, setting up Sha Tin Station as a major stop along the line. 1961 The government’s Satellite Town master plan was rolled out, locking in Sha Tin as one of the pioneer new towns. 1973 The Sha Tin New Town project officially kicked off into high gear, triggering massive land reclamation and large-scale urban planning. 1981 The Sha Tin District Council was formally established. —
