🗺️ Geography & Trail Highlights
- Shui Hau: The hike kicks off at the peaceful Shui Hau Village, where you’ll climb a set of stone steps up to the catchwater, rising from 20m to about 105m above sea level. Right next to the village lies a vibrant intertidal mudflat packed with diverse coastal ecology.
- Catchwater: The vast majority of this section runs right alongside a catchwater. The ground is flat, nicely shaded by dense trees, and incredibly peaceful. You can hear the soothing sound of flowing water as you walk, with occasional wide-open clearances serving up great views of Lantau Peak.
- Tong Fuk: Passing by a local BBQ site, you’ll get a fantastic bird’s-eye view looking down at Tong Fuk Beach. Historically known as “Tong Tong”, the village has been settled by the Chan and Tang clans since the late Ming Dynasty. Archeologists have uncovered ancient Tang Dynasty lime kilns at Miu Wan, alongside pottery shards and stone tools dating all the way back to the Bronze Age. The local Hung Shing Temple, built in 1803 (the 8th year of the Jiaqing reign) to honor the god of the sea, houses a historic bronze bell from that very same year. The village also features a Tin Hau Temple and a Guan Di Temple, showcasing a rich mix of local spiritual traditions.
- Cheung Sha: Boasting one of the longest sandy beaches in Hong Kong, Cheung Sha is split into an Upper and Lower Village. The villagers’ ancestors originally migrated here from Guishan Island about two hundred years ago. Upper Village is one of Hong Kong’s top five archaeological hotspots, having turned up historical artifacts stretching from the Neolithic period right up to the Tang Dynasty. Today, Cheung Sha is famous as a laid-back holiday resort, dotted with European-style villas and beachfront cafes.
