Starting from 【Kwu Tung Market (古洞街市)】, head up 【Kwu Tung South Road (古洞南路)】 to reach 【Kwu Tung Reservoir (古洞水塘)】, the famous 「Heart-shaped Lake」. Next, tackle the steep dirt paths and loose scree up 【Tung Sum Leng (東心嶺)】 and 【Ki Lun Shan (麒麟山)】. The summit offers wide-open views of Shenzhen, 【San Tin (新田)】, and 【Mai Po (米埔)】, with stunning silvergrass in autumn. Descend carefully through 【Ki Lun Shan Au (麒麟山坳)】—it’s quite steep—before climbing to 【Ngau Tam Shan (牛潭山)】 (337m) for a panoramic view of the 【Kwu Tung (古洞)】 plains. Finally, head down to 【Tsiu Keng (蕉徑)】 to catch a minibus back to 【Sheung Shui Station (上水站)】.

【Starting Point】 Take minibus 50A from 【MTR • Sheung Shui Station (港鐵 • 上水站)】 and hop off at 【Kwu Tung Market (古洞 • 街市)】. Cross the road to 【Kwu Tung South Road (古洞南路)】 to start your hike. As you head along 【Kwu Tung South Road (古洞南路)】, you’ll pass a public toilet—handy for a quick pit stop before the real work begins. After walking for about 700m to the end of the road, hang a left and you’ll see 【Kwu Tung Reservoir (古洞水塘)】.

【Finishing Point】 After leaving 【Leng Tau (嶺頭)】, push on for another 500m to reach the next summit, 【Ngau Tam Shan (牛潭山)】. Once you’ve taken in the views, head down the steep and loose dirt paths. Once you hit level ground, follow the stone path until you reach 【Tsiu Keng Pang Uk (蕉徑彭屋)】, a quiet farming village. Walk along 【Tsiu Keng Road (蕉徑路)】 out to 【Fan Kam Road (粉錦公路)】, where you can catch a bus or minibus back to 【Sheung Shui (上水)】 or 【Yuen Long (元朗)】 town centre.

Follow the path around the reservoir to the opposite side. Looking back towards the entrance, the view is just as 『chill』 and picturesque.

6. 📍 Tung Shum Pai • Mountain Path

Once you reach the end of the reservoir, start heading up the dirt path towards 【Ki Lun Shan (麒麟山)】. When taking a break mid-slope, don’t forget to look back and enjoy the view of 【Kwu Tung Reservoir (古洞水塘)】 right beneath you.

After a bit of a grind, you’ve finally reached the main goal of the trip: 【Ki Lun Shan (麒麟山)】. The mountain lives up to its name; like the mythical Kirin, it boasts a golden body. Standing at the peak, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the Yuen Long and Sheung Shui areas, with the skyscrapers of Futian, Shenzhen, visible in the distance.

8. 📍 Ki Lun Shan

After a bit of a grind, you’ve finally reached the main goal of the trip: 【Ki Lun Shan (麒麟山)】. The mountain lives up to its name; like the mythical Kirin (麒麟), it boasts a golden body. After crossing 【Ki Lun Shan Au (麒麟山坳)】, head to the trail across the road and continue uphill towards the next stop, 【Ngau Tam Shan (牛潭山)】. When you’re midway up, take a breather and look back at the golden 【Ki Lun Shan (麒麟山)】 in the distance.

11. 📍 🐸 Frog Rock

Hidden along the mountainside is a peculiar-looking 【🐸 Frog Rock (🐸 青蛙石)】.

12. 📍 Leng Tau

Now at 【Leng Tau (嶺頭)】, look back at 【Ki Lun Shan (麒麟山)】, which is now nearly 2km away. Being up here on the high ridges gives you a great perspective of 【Ki Lun Shan (麒麟山)】 and the wide-open landscape surrounding it.

13. 📍 Ngau Tam Shan

After leaving 【Leng Tau (嶺頭)】, walk for another 500m to reach the next peak, 【Ngau Tam Shan (牛潭山)】.

14. 📍 Tsiu Keng • Pang Uk

Leaving 【Ngau Tam Shan (牛潭山)】, head down the slope via a steep and loose dirt path. Once you hit level ground, follow the paved path until you reach the farming village of 【Tsiu Keng • Pang Uk (蕉徑 • 彭屋)】.

15. 📍 Tsiu Keng • Lo Wai

Tsiu Keng • Lo Wai (蕉徑 • 老圍)

Walk along 【Tsiu Keng Road (蕉徑路)】 towards 【Fan Kam Road (粉錦公路)】 to catch a bus or minibus back to Sheung Shui or Yuen Long town centre.

16. 📍 Tsiu Keng • Fan Kam Road
