Litsea (scientific name: Litsea), belonging to the family Lauraceae, is a genus of evergreen or deciduous trees or shrubs. Litsea species are widely distributed across tropical and subtropical regions of Asia, Australia, New Zealand, North America, and South America. In China, there are about 70 species of Litsea, mainly growing in the warm southern and southwestern regions. The seeds and roots of Litsea are often used as spices, serving as an important seasoning particularly in Yi culinary culture. Due to over-logging, the wild Litsea population has dwindled, driving up market prices. Currently, some regions have initiated protection for Litsea plants to prevent further decline. The leaves and fruits of Litsea carry a unique fragrance, which some describe as resembling ginger, fermented black beans, or lemon. During the spring flowering season, it sheds its leaves and bursts into striking clusters of pale yellow flowers. These features make Litsea not only useful in cooking but also highly favored in gardening and landscape design.
