The 《Couplet Right Side》 reads: “The streams of Lai Chi Wo embrace the flowing rivers, smilingly waving goodbye to the youth rushing to foreign lands.” This depicts the stunning natural landscape of the village surrounded by hills and waters. “Youth” refers to those in the prime of their lives—capturing the 1950s and 1960s when many villagers left their homeland as young adults to work hard in the UK and Europe for a better livelihood. The 《Couplet Left Side》 reads: “The leaves and branches spread their floral fragrance, calling back the silver-haired elders to their splendid ancestral halls.” After decades of hard work, their descendants have thrived overseas like spreading branches, and the young migrants of yesteryear are now “silver-haired” seniors, called back by their roots to return with honor to these grand Hakka homes.
