How Yung Shue Au fit into the layout of the “Sha Tau Kok Villages.” A “Heung Yeung” (Hing Yeung) was an ancient alliance between villages set up to coordinate local defense, traditional rituals, and community affairs. Even though Yung Shue Au sits on the south coast of Sha Tau Kok Hoi and is geographically closer to the villages of the Hing Chun Alliance, the villagers chose to align themselves with the Sam Wo Tong alliance on the north coast, headed by Tam Shui Hang. They kept tight bonds with the Wan clan of Tam Shui Hang, showcasing the unique community identity of Yung Shue Au in the Sha Tau Kok region. Travel between Yung Shue Au and Sha Tau Kok relied mostly on boats, and the old pier in the village was a regular call for kaito ferries. As transport demands shot up in the 1960s, a new pier was built to replace the old one.
