Local Hakka villages are mostly built against hillsides, with a dense feng shui wood at the rear, a drying terrace out front for farming activities, and a fish pond situated just beyond that. A river or stream often wraps around the front of the settlement, and a Pak Kung shrine or Pak Kung tree is usually located right beside the village. The layout of different Hakka houses shares several common features: upon stepping inside, you will find the kitchen on one side and a bathroom on the other, with the bathroom shielded only by a low partition wall. The center of the house features a main hall dedicated to the ancestral shrine, with bedrooms located behind it and a staircase to the side leading to the upper floor rooms.
