Plover Cove Country Park – Tai Mei Tuk Management Centre, Camel’s Foot Tree

The Camel’s Foot Tree (scientific name: Bauhinia variegata) is a flowering plant in the family Fabaceae, subfamily Caesalpinioideae, and genus Bauhinia. It is commonly known as Orchid Tree, Pink Bauhinia, and Mountain Ebony. Native to Southern China, Taiwan, India, and the Malay Peninsula, this small deciduous tree blooms between March and May after dropping its leaves. The blossoms feature 5 pink petals, one of which is adorned with deep red streaks. The flowers, flower buds, tender leaves, and young seedpods are edible and used in traditional medicine, while a decoction made from the root bark is used to treat indigestion. Known for its brilliant blooms and faint, delicate fragrance, it typically bursts into full flower before new leaves emerge, draping the canopy in a striking shade of pink. This spectacular display rivaling cherry blossoms makes it highly popular for landscaping along trails and in gardens. It is easily confused with other species of the same genus, such as the Purple Bauhinia (Bauhinia purpurea) and the Hong Kong Orchid Tree (Bauhinia blakeana), though they differ primarily in their blooming seasons and leaf conditions.
