Chinese Holly 《II》

Chinese Holly (Ilex chinensis) is a common evergreen shrub or small tree belonging to the family Aquifoliaceae. Its leaves are oblong or obovate with serrated margins; the upper surface is smooth and deep green, while the underside is pale green. As its Chinese name implies, the leaf blade is slightly concave in the middle, which is a distinctive feature of this species. The flowering period typically occurs in spring, producing small white or pale yellow blossoms in the leaf axils. Its berry-like fruits turn a striking red or orange when ripe, usually between autumn and winter. These eye-catching fruits are not only ornamental but also attract birds, giving the plant high ecological value. It typically grows in mountainous areas, forest edges, and thickets, showing strong adaptability with low soil requirements. Chinese Holly is widely used in landscaping as hedges, background plants, or potted ornaments due to its evergreen nature and vibrant berries. In traditional Chinese medicine, it also holds medicinal value, where its leaves and fruits are believed to clear heat, detoxify, reduce swelling, and alleviate pain, and are often used to treat certain inflammatory and infectious conditions.
