The Pinewood Battery was constructed in 1899 using a masonry structure composed of massive granite blocks, which also earned it the nickname “Stone Fort.” It is a two-story military structure equipped with defense installations such as observation posts, bunkers, and artillery platforms. Large cannons were once stationed on the platforms for coastal defense. Built during the period when Hong Kong was still a British colony, it was developed as part of Hong Kong’s coastal defense system aimed at protecting the coastlines from potential enemy incursions. The battery played a vital defensive role during the Second World War.
