Wilson Trail – Section 9, Litsea rotundifolia / Aromatic Litsea

Litsea (scientific name: Litsea), belonging to the Lauraceae family, is a genus of evergreen or deciduous trees or shrubs. Plants of the Litsea genus are widely distributed throughout tropical and subtropical regions of Asia, Australia, New Zealand, North America, and South America. In China, there are around 70 species of Litsea, mostly growing in the warm regions of South and Southwest China. The seeds and roots of Litsea are frequently used as spices; notably, within the culinary culture of the Yi ethnic group, Litsea serves as a vital seasoning. Due to over-harvesting, the population of wild Litsea has dwindled, leading to rising market prices. Currently, certain regions have initiated protection efforts for Litsea species to prevent further depletion. The leaves and fruits of Litsea carry a unique fragrance, which some describe as resembling ginger or fermented black beans, or possessing a lemony aroma. During the spring blossoming season, Litsea sheds its leaves and bursts into clusters of small, pale-yellow flowers, making it highly eye-catching. These characteristics make Litsea not only useful in cooking but also popular in horticulture and landscape design.
