On the mudflats of Lai Chi Wo, you can find the largest recorded bed of dwarf eelgrass (Zostera japonica) in Hong Kong, covering an area of about 2 hectares. During extremely low tides, this grass carpet looks like a sprawling green lawn blanketed across the vast mudflats. Seagrasses are the only flowering plants that can fully survive while submerged in seawater, growing along shallow, sheltered, and muddy shores or estuaries. The long, ribbon-like leaves of the dwarf eelgrass feature slightly notched tips, and the beds they form provide vital shelter, spawning grounds, and nurseries for marine life, making this an incredibly important habitat.
