Wong Nai Chung Electricity Substation

Wong Nai Chung Electricity Substation is a historical building located in in the of Hong Kong Island. Completed in 1905, it was one of Hong Kong’s earliest hydroelectric power plants. This power station utilized the water pressure from the to drive water turbines and generators, providing electricity to residents in the southern part of Hong Kong Island. The architectural style of the Wong Nai Chung Electricity Substation is Classical Revival, featuring external walls constructed of red bricks and granite, topped with a red-tiled roof. The front facade of the power station features a rounded arch entrance with a clock tower situated above it. The interior of the power station housed two large water turbines and two generators, along with various control equipment and gauges. The Wong Nai Chung Electricity Substation ceased operations in 1918 when Hong Kong Electric built a larger thermal power plant in North Point to provide a greater supply of electricity. The Wong Nai Chung Electricity Substation was later converted into an office and staff quarters for the Water Supplies Department, until it was eventually listed as a declared monument in 1995. Today, the Wong Nai Chung Electricity Substation still retains its original exterior appearance and machinery, though it is not open to the general public. Those interested in visiting can apply for a reservation through the Country Park Management Office. The Wong Nai Chung Electricity Substation is also a popular spot among photography enthusiasts due to its rich historic atmosphere and unique architectural style.
