Tree Tag

The tree tagging project in Hong Kong’s countryside is an initiative aimed at raising public awareness and appreciation of trees. By installing tree tags equipped with QR codes on trees, the project allows citizens to scan them with their smartphones to access detailed botanical information, including their Chinese and English names, scientific names, species, and whether they are native or exotic. These tags are designed with pedestrians’ line of sight in mind, making it convenient for the public to scan and retrieve information. The initial phase of the project has commenced and will be completed in stages, eventually covering around 100 tree species across various districts in Hong Kong. This project not only helps citizens report problematic trees but also serves as an educational tool, enhancing the public’s understanding of and interest in local flora. Furthermore, the initiative encourages citizens to respect and cherish trees, fostering a harmonious coexistence between society and nature, thereby enhancing Hong Kong’s ecological environment and the quality of life for its residents. It is an innovative approach combining technology with nature education, helping to raise public awareness of environmental protection.
