Visitor Info Board: Reclaiming Land and Agricultural Terraces, Hok Tau - Embankment

Reshaping the Land: The story of farming adaptation in . With its steep terrain, farming here was a massive challenge, so villagers carved out arable land from the rugged landscape by building agricultural terraces and reclaiming land from the sea. Old records show that villagers built two embankments to expand their farmland: an arched one built near 《Tai Wong Pak Kung》 before the 1860s, which has since been removed, and a straight one built in the early 20th century, which still stands between the hills and the sea today. Since the late 1970s, as farming declined and flood controls fell into disrepair, seawater backflow caused the river ponds to expand to three times their original size. The old reclaimed fields have gradually turned into mangroves and brackish river ponds, showing how natural forces reshape the landscape and marking the end of ‘s farming era.
